“Kisasa Wimbo” is Swahili for “New Song” and this group of dedicated and talented choristers (grades 3-6) indeed brings a “new song” into worship at St. john’s Lutheran Church. The Kisasa Choristers are a new choir to St. John’s as fall 2009, combining the former Boy and Girl Choirs of that age into one powerful group. These young people sing repertoire of many styles, times and cultures.
The Kisasa Choristers have elected ASAP as their charity of choice. ASAP, After School Arts Program, offers unique learning opportunities for at-risk 3rd-5th grade students in Des Moines public schools. The program allows students who have demonstrated artistic interests and talent to connect directly with teaching artists in a variety of hands-on classroom studios, providing them opportunities to grow their artistic abilities, social skills and self-esteem. With the assistance of artists from the local community, ASAP, offers studios ranging from ceramics, painting and photography to West African drumming, Brazilian Capoeira and dance.
