Registration is now open for the spring season of Junior Menace. Junior Menace is divided up into two age groups which are ages 3–4 and ages 5–9.

Junior Menace consists of three sessions at three different locations. Session three is at Menace Practice Facility and goes from April29–May30. Practice is held on Mondays and games are played on Fridays. More info

Ages 3–4 Practice and play from 5:30pm–6:00pm | Ages 5–9 Practice and play from 6:00pm–7:00pm

Registration fee $50 (for ages 3–4) | $100 (for ages 5–9)

New Gallery Show Opens May 17

Iowa Watercolor Society Miniature Show opens at the St Mark Gallery, 1105 Grand Avenue in West Des Moines on May 17 with an artist’s reception from 6:30-8 pm. The exhibit runs from May 17-June 11; visit during regular gallery hours Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the gallery is free and open to the public.

We are excited to announce the 5th Annual 2013 Smokin’ in the Junction BBQ Contest on Saturday and Sunday, May 25th & 26th. Join us for hot BBQ, great food, live music, food vendors, kids activities, inflatables, the beer garden and two days full of fun! This event will be held from 12:00 – 10:00 pm on Saturday, and from 12:00 – 9:00 pm on Sunday. Sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) our event is one of the largest BBQ competitions in Iowa and our $13,000+ awards include $1,500 for our Grand Champion and 48 competitors. Food and drink may not be purchased from our competitors, but is available from food vendors located along 5th Street. The performance stage and beer garden will be located at the south end of 5th Street. As a featured event of A-MAY-Zing Days (www.amayzingdays.com) Smokin’ in the Junction will culminate a month of community events and activities in West Des Moines. Event takes place both Saturday May 25 thru Sunday May 26 from 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM both days.

$8 in advance at Woodsmith Garden Center, 10320 Hickman Road, Clive, and at Dahl’s Foods, 3425 Ingersoll Ave. and 1819 Beaver Ave. Day-of-tour tickets are $10 and will be available at 2700 University Ave., on the porch of the American Judicature Society house.

The first Drake garden tour will give visitors some creative ideas for improving their own yards. The tour on Saturday and Sunday will highlight six gardens featuring sun and shade perennials, ponds, edibles and recycled creations. Two of the gardens have been featured in Garden Gate Magazine and a third in Better Homes and Gardens. Also, at one site, 1806 36th St., a plant sale will be held.
