The Drake University TrebleMakers began with two. Kathleen Wilson and Jessica Shalita met as members of the Drake Chorale, the women’s choir on Drake’s campus. The topic of a capella music sprung up into conversation, and the two realized that there was an a capella group for men, but there was no such opportunity for women. In response, the ambitious first-year students decided to undertake a huge project: start a female a capella group at Drake University. After holding auditions, the group met, and the name “Drake TrebleMakers” was soon adopted. This lively group of women began rehearsing a variety of pop and jazz a capella pieces, which expanded their repertoire while helping them gain recognition on campus through different performances.
The group debuted as the opening act at Drake University’s presentation of the Vagina Monologues in Februrary 2008. Since then, the Treblemakers have had many more performances, in addition to opening for Tonic Sol-Fa last year at Hoyt Sherman Place, and have reached audiences around the Des Moines area and throughout the Midwest. They are entering the Holiday Idol Contest for the second year in a row, and continue to support House of Mercy as their charity. These singers hope that this amazing foundation can not only benefit from half of the contest’s prize money, but also from increased awareness of the community of how to improve the lives of battered women everywhere.
Unfortunately, like most new groups, the Drake Treblemakers have an extremely tight budget, and therefore the girls are unable to purchase much of the music that they would like to perform. Their portion of the prize money will help the Drake TrebleMakers become better known within the community while spreading cheer through the joy of music. There is no better way to help the singers than to help their favorite charity in the process, especially during this season of giving.
